International anger at Israeli attack

November 9, 2006 at 9:37 am (Politics and History, War)

The death of 18 Palestinians, including eight children, during an Israeli attack in Beit Hanoun has provoked condemnation from around the world.

The special UN envoy for the Middle East, Alvaro de Soto, said he was “deeply shocked and appalled” by the shelling of civilian homes by Israeli forces.

In Cairo, the Arab League denounced the Palestinian deaths as a massacre and called an emergency meeting of foreign ministers from its 22 member nations.

Amr Moussa, the organisation’s secretary general, said: “These massacres of children, women and civilians are unjustified and incomprehensible and unexpected.

“Israeli policies in the Palestinian territories have gone too far.”

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar, called Ismail Haniya, the Palestinian prime minister, to condemn the attack.

Sacked sex-scandal pastor confesses: I am a liar

November 7, 2006 at 12:00 pm (Politics and History, Religion)

FIRST it was: “I never meet this man.” Then it was: “I bought drugs off him but I never used them, and I never had sex with him.” But by Sunday, it was time for confession.

Ted Haggard, former head of the 30 million-member National Association of Evangelicals — the man with President George Bush’s ear — finally told all: he was a hypocrite and a liar. The overseers of the New Life Church in Colorado, which he founded, sacked him for “sexually immoral conduct”.

It was the most spectacular downfall of an evangelical leader since the Reverend Jim Bakker was embroiled in a sex and accounting scandal in 1987.

In a letter read out to the Sunday congregation at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Pastor Haggard said: “I am guilty of sexual immorality, and I take responsibility for the entire problem. I am a deceiver and a liar.”….(continued in article)
